State-based SP bills

SF 1125 Sen. John Marty (co-sponsors 25/67)

HF 1200 Rep. Alice Mann (co-sponsors 23/134)

A true Single Payer bill; More information can be found at

Related legislation (pending)

Rep. Alice Mann plans to introduce another bill in the next session with a concrete roadmap of how to implement the plan.

Obstacles to SP in the current context

  • We have several health insurance companies head-quartered here, like Blue Cross Blue Shield and United Health Group as well as the medical device industry. We're always fighting ideology and the misinformation being put out by the profiteers.
  • Purple suburban districts are a challenge, as well as any moderate Dems who take money from the health insurance industry or Big Pharma.
  • At national level, we only have one Congressperson out of 8 who is a co-sponsor of the federal legislation (Rep. Ilhan Omar).

Advantages for SP in current context
We have a Dem governor (elected 2018) and a majority Dem House since 2018. (Not Senate yet)

Goals for SP movement in CA 2019-2020

We need to flip the state Senate in 2020.

We have taken the strategy of forming local chapters around the state to do the educating and organizing tasks in their local communities.
