H.P. 1611 An Act to Support Universal Healthcare

Summary: A comprehensive, universal, publicly funded bill, based on the Minnesota Health Plan.

Sponsors: Presented by Representative BROOKS of Lewiston (9 of 186)

Status  LD 1611 : has been carried over to the next legislative session

Support for SP in the current context

An economic feasibility study by the Maine Center for Economic Policy (MECEP),  Assessing the Costs and Impacts of a State-Level Universal Health Care System in Maine, was presented at a hearing 12/16/19 before the Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Health Coverage, Insurance, and Financial Services.  The study was commissioned by Maine All Care to model how such a health system could by financed within the state.  The study concluded that “a universal, publicly funded health care system that covers every Maine resident could save Maine $1.5 billion in total health care spending.”  Links to the full report and executive summary are in the right sidebar.  An audio of the hearing (12/16) can be accessed at this URL

Goals for 2020

Use the MECEP feasibility report to enhance our grassroots advocacy for the bill.
